Tips
- Switzerland uses the franc (CHF), not the euro, even though it is in the Schengen area.
- The water from the public fountains is safe to drink, and the Migros and Coop supermarkets are the cheapest way to eat.
- In summer the locals swim in the lake and in the River Limmat: the public baths cost little and turn into bars in the evening.
Frequently asked questions
How do you save money in Zurich?
Drink water from the public fountains, have lunch from the supermarkets, use the day ticket for transport and enjoy the free things: the lake, the Lindenhof and the walks on Uetliberg. Stay near the station or outside the centre.
How much money do you need per day in Zurich?
Excluding the flight and accommodation, plan on 80-130 francs a day. Zurich is among the most expensive cities in the world: dinner in a restaurant easily tops 40 francs per person.
What documents do I need?
Switzerland is not in the EU, but it is in the Schengen area. Albanian citizens with a biometric passport enter without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your return date. The ETIAS online authorisation is expected to become mandatory for Switzerland too: check before you leave whether it has come into force.
When are tickets cheapest?
Usually from November to March, outside holidays and long weekends, and for midweek departures. The prices on this page are checked every 3 hours, and the best deals are posted on our Telegram channel.
