A 3-day itinerary

  2. Schönbrunn in the morning: the palace, the gardens and the Gloriette hill. In the afternoon, the Naschmarkt and the MuseumsQuartier.

  • Neubau and MariahilfThe neighbourhoods of shops, cafés and galleries, close to the MuseumsQuartier.

What to eat

  • Wiener SchnitzelA thin, breaded veal schnitzel, bigger than the plate.
  • SachertorteThe chocolate cake with apricot jam, invented at the Hotel Sacher.

Getting around the city

The U-Bahn, trams and buses all run on a single ticket. The 24-, 48- or 72-hour ticket is almost always worth it. Trams 1 and 2 go round the Ring past the main buildings, like a cheap tour of the city.

Day trips from Vienna

  • BratislavaThe capital of Slovakia is only an hour away by train, or by boat on the Danube.
  • Wachau ValleyMelk Abbey and the wine villages along the Danube, about an hour by train.
  • SalzburgAbout 2.5 hours by train, doable as a long day out.

What it costs

A melange coffee costs €4-5, a Wiener Schnitzel €15-22, and the 24-hour transport ticket about €8-10.

When to go

April to October for the parks and palaces. The Christmas markets open from mid-November.

Tips

  • Don't take the CAT unless you need to: the S7 costs a third as much and takes only 10 minutes longer.
  • The tap water comes from the Alps and is excellent.
  • For the State Opera, standing tickets are sold at a very low price shortly before the performance.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book Schönbrunn?

Yes, especially from April to October: tickets for the palace interior are sold for a set time and sell out. The gardens are free and open from early in the morning.

How much money do you need per day in Vienna?

Excluding the flight and accommodation, plan on €50-80 a day. Palace admissions are the biggest expense: Schönbrunn and the Belvedere cost about €20-30 each.

What documents do I need?

Austria is in the Schengen area. Albanian citizens with a biometric passport enter without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your return date. Biometric data is recorded at the border (the EES system), and the ETIAS online authorisation is expected to become mandatory: check before you leave whether it has come into force.

When are tickets cheapest?

Usually from November to March, outside holidays and long weekends, and for midweek departures. The prices on this page are checked every 3 hours, and the best deals are posted on our Telegram channel.
