From the airport to the centre
Istanbul (IST)
From Istanbul Airport (IST) the M11 metro takes you to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 line towards Taksim. Havaist buses run direct to Taksim and Sultanahmet in 60-90 minutes. If your flight lands at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), on the Asian side, take the Havabus buses to Taksim or Kadıköy.

Getting around the city
Traffic is heavy, so avoid taxis at rush hour. The T1 tram links Sultanahmet with the Galata Bridge and Kabataş, the metro and the Marmaray train run under the Bosphorus, and the ferries are the loveliest way to change continents. You pay for all of them with the Istanbulkart.
Day trips from Istanbul
- Princes' IslandsCar-free, with wooden villas and pine trees, about an hour by ferry.
- Upper BosphorusThe long route of the public ferry takes you as far as Anadolu Kavağı, near the Black Sea.
- BursaThe first Ottoman capital, about 2-3 hours away by ferry and bus.
What it costs
Prices in lira change often. A simple meal (kebab, pide) costs the equivalent of €6-10 and a tea less than €1.

April to June and September to October. Summer is hot and humid, winter is rainy.
Tips
- Albanian citizens enter Turkey without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days.
- Get an Istanbulkart as soon as you arrive: it's valid on the metro, trams, buses and ferries.
- Take off your shoes to enter a mosque and wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees; women cover their heads with a scarf. During prayers visitors wait outside.
- In the bazaar haggling is part of the game: start at about half the asking price.

Excluding the flight and accommodation, plan on €35-60 a day. Food and transport are cheap, but entrance fees for foreigners have gone up a lot: Hagia Sophia and Topkapi cost about €25-50 each.
What documents do I need?
Albanian citizens enter Turkey without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days. All you need is your passport, which should ideally be valid for at least 6 months after your date of entry.
